Zurabov Reports Demographic Improvement to Putin
The demographic situation has improved in Russia in 2007, the RF Health and Social Development Minister Mikhail Zurabov announced, specifying that “the birth rate grew by 22,600 vs. the growth of 16,100 over the whole 2006,” ITAR-TASS reported.
“The death rate shed by 138,000 cases past year and went down by 52,500 in the four months of this year,” the minister said. “The trend for decline in the rate of baby deaths is very positive; the mortality for babies younger than a year old shed 15 percent on year.”
“In certain regions, the drop in the rate of baby deaths was much more material than generally in Russia. In Central and North-West districts for instance, the decline was of 19 percent to 20 percent,” Zurabov went on, pointing out that there were eight or nine districts with more than the double drop in baby deaths.
The reasons of such healthy trend, the minister said, were the increase in salaries for medial personnel, new equipment, better quality of medical help and earlier record of future mothers.
