Russia, Moldova Secretly Shape Transdniestria’s Treaty
Russia and Moldova are secretly shaping a new treaty on Transdniestria, Nezavisimaya Gazeta reported Wednesday.
The parties are said to be nearing a separate treaty, whereby Russia will maintain military presence in Transdniestria for another ten years, but the unrecognized republic will become a part of Moldova again, retaining a special status though.
In exchange for the signature, Moldova will get back access to Russia’s markets and will resume wine supplies to the country. Russia banned Moldova’s wine deliveries in 2006, blaming the decision on poor quality of the product. As a result, Moldova’s revenues from wine sales shed more than three fold on year in the first months of 2007, according to some data.
But in 2003, Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin refused to seal the three-party treaty, the so-called Kozak plan, which also provided for maintaining military presence of Russia in the region. The recent leak, sources of Nezavisimaya Gazeta said, was orchestrated by anti-Russian associates of Voronin, who had wrecked the Kozak plan and whose opposition to the future treaty is very strong.
