U.S. Confirms Will to Cooperate with Russia in Missile Defense
The United States has again proposed the missile defense cooperation to Russia, according to The Associated Press.
The threat exists not only for the United States and their European allies but also for Russia, U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said when commenting on Russia’s tests of a cruise missile and of intercontinental ballistic missile. The U.S. missile defense system, which components will be deployed in Eastern Europe, poses no threat to Russia, Casey reiterated the previous statements of Bush administration.
The current tests have shown the missiles “can overcome all existing and potential systems of missile defense,” Russia’s First Vice Premier Sergey Ivanov vowed. Casey refused to officially assess Ivanov’s words but specified that Pentagon will study his statement.
As to the United States, this country has expressly proclaimed it will station the missile defense shield in Eastern Europe all opposition of Russia notwithstanding. Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary Daniel Fata announced it May 27, echoing the previous statement of State Secretary Condoleezza Rice.
