Britain’s Detectives Deem Kovtun Involved
Russia’s businessman Dmitry Kovtun was involved in polonium assassination of Alexander Litvinenko. The files of the case brought against Andrey Lugovoy mention Kovtun exactly in this status, Interfax reported with reference to sources in Moscow and in London.
The definite charges haven’t been lodged to Kovtuv, as he is mentioned just “as potential accomplice,” one of the sources said.
On May 28, Russia’s Prosecutor General Office received papers of Britain’s detectives probing into killing of ex-FBR agent Alexander Litvinenko by polonium-210. The demand of Britain is to extradite the main suspect – Russian businessman Andrey Lugovoy.
The Brits decided against presenting charges to two suspects in one go for tactical reasons, the source said, specifying they preferred first to see the Kremlin’s response to requested extradition of Lugovoy.
Moscow has always refused to hand over Lugovoy, as the RF constitution forbids extradition of Russia’s citizens. A case related to Litvinenko’s killing and attempted murder of Kovtun has been opened in Russia and Lugovoy is just a witness here.
Alexander Litvinenko met with Andrey Lugovoy and Dmitry Kovtun in the London Millennium Hotel on November 1. He fell ill the same day and died in a London hospital after a little while.
