EU Will Probably Block Russia’s Accession to WTO
The European Union may halt the WTO entry bid of Russia should no compromise on Polish meat imports be finally worked out, Poland's President Lech Kaczynski made clear, emphasizing, however, the intent of Warsaw to maintain good neighboring relations with Russia and pointing out that confrontation is not their aim.
Russia banned Polish meat deliveries November 2005, blaming this move on fake vet certificates. Warsaw reasoned it was a politically-motivated decision, a sort of revenge for refusing to stay under the wing of Russia. The real purpose of Warsaw, according to Kaczynski, is to make Moscow understand that there are no grounds for resuming Russia’s influence in Eastern Europe.
Warsaw responded to the meat ban of Moscow by blocking talks on a new cooperation agreement between the European Union and Russia. Ever since, the EU has been urging the Kremlin to lift the ban, to no avail though – the recent talks held in Cyprus on April 21 and 22 proved equally abortive.
