Suicide Number Surged in Army of Russia
Sixty eight committed suicide in the RF Armed Forces in the first four months of this year, 26 percent up vs. a year earlier, Major General Alexander Devyatko from the Main Military Prosecutors’ Office said today during the first meeting of sergeants and master sergeants of the RF Army.
More than 5,000 crimes have been registered in the RF Armed Forces since early this year. Of this number, vicious hazing, manhandling and draft evasion accounted for 53.1 percent.
Twenty seven died because of the vicious hazing past year, Devyatko said, specifying that the number of victims exceeded 5,500 (1,500 from early this year).
Past year, military prosecutors revealed around 131,000 cases of laws’ violation and initiated around 4,000 criminal actions. More than 27,000 soldiers and officers were brought to account. In 2007, the overall number of crimes registered in the RF Army and Navy slid 3 percent on year to over 23,000, according to Devyatko. At the same time, the number of crimes committed by sergeants and master sergeants soared 40 percent on year.
“From early this year, 979 sergeants and master sergeants were brought to account. The number of crimes committed by contract military stepped up 71 percent,” Devyatko said.
