Amnesty International Widens List of Claims to Russia
Amnesty International has presented the human rights report for 2006, spelling out more claims to Russia vs. the previous report, which highlight was the human rights abuse in Chechnya, Vedomosti reported.
In Russia, the crackdown on independent civil society has intensified, the analysts of the Amnesty International said, pointing out the laws on NGOs passed in 2005 paved the way to arbitrary rule of authorities and distracted resources from vital programs.
Amid other things, Russia’s authorities were abusing the right for freedom of meetings. The rallies of globalization opponents were halted in St. Petersburg during the G8 summit, and a man was killed in Dagestan in April, when the meeting was dispersed there.
The crackdown on journalists continued in 2006. Investigating journalist Anna Politkovskaya was killed exactly past year, the Amnesty International emphasized.
And last but not least, the authorities failed to oppose racism and discrimination rooting in national or sexual grounds. The example is the verdict to killers of Tadjikistan’s girl and the clashes of participants and opponents of gay-parade in Moscow.
