Putin, Sarkozy Vow Close Ties
Russian President Vladimir Putin and France’s new leader Nicolas Sarkozy have pledged to maintain close ties between their countries in a telephone conversation on Monday, the Kremlin said. The Russian president also gave his personal congratulations on Mr. Sarkozy’s election to office.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have expressed an intention to uphold intensified Russian-French dialog and cooperation in trade and economy, the Kremlin press service said in a statement.

The new center-right president took the office after defeating the Socialists’ Segolene Royal in the May 6 runoff election. On May 16, Nicolas Sarkozy was sworn-in as France’s new leader, taking over the reins of power from outgoing Jacques Chirac.

In his inauguration address Nicolas Sarkozy said that relations with the United States would be a priority in foreign policy. Many Russian experts have predicted that close ties between Moscow and Paris may soon become a thing of the past.
