Nazarbaev to Reign in Kazakhstan for Life
Kazakhstan’s parliament has voted for amendments to the constitution that will lift restrictions for the office term of Kazakh first and yet the sole president, Nursultan Nazarbaev.
Over 100 lawmakers of both houses of Kazakh parliament voted for the life-long rule of Kazakh president at the joint sitting, and only one legislator was against such life-long tenure. So, Nazarbaev will be able to run for presidency after 2012 once he signs the bill into law.
The decision was taken with regard to historic role of the first president as one of the founders of independent Kazakhstan and in view of necessity to complete political and economic reforms that are currently underway, said Ermet Zhumbaev, head of the conciliatory commission of parliament.
Earlier this week, the parliament passed in the final reading the amendments to constitution that materially widen president’s authority. Nursultan Nazarbaev was the mastermind of the bill.
President Nursultan Nazarbaev, 66, has been ruling Kazakhstan since 1989, i.e. since the time of the Soviet Union.
