Russia Ready to Jointly Operate Gabalinsk Radar with U.S.
Russia may consider joint operation of Gabalinsk radar with the United States, Trend news agency reported with reference to Russia’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasily Istratov. Istratov made the respective statement at the news conference Tuesday.
The United States has expressed interest in getting the information from radars operated by Russia, including Gabalinsk radar, which Russia leases from Azerbaijan, Istratov said. Now, everything depends on proposals of the United States, the diplomat made clear.

Built in times of the Soviet Union in Azerbaijan, Gabalinsk radar forms part of Russia’s system of tracking ballistic missile launches. The agreement for its ten-year lease was inked in 2002 and expires in 2012. In early 2006, Baku attempted to hike annual payment for the facility from $7 million to $14.4 million.
