Maskaev to Defend Belt Against Peter Sept 29
WBC heavyweight champ Oleg Maskaev of Russia will probably fight mandatory challenger Samuel Peter of Nigeria on September 29, 2007, fightnews.com reported referring to Maskaev’s promoter Dennis Rappaport. “I’m waiting for some confirmations but nothing is etched in stone,” Rappaport said.
Today’s concern of Rappaport is to change the purse split. Maskaev is due to get 55 percent for the bout with Peter (the overall amount is $3.2 million), but the usual practice is to give 70 percent to the champ and just 30 percent to the challenger irrespective of result of the fight.

The exceptions are made if the challenger is the former champ or if his presence is bound to draw big crowd or to arouse interest of sponsors. “According to the WBC rules a deviation will only be allowed under special and unusual circumstances. What's so special and unusual about Samuel Peter?" Rappaport said as quoted by fightnews.com.
