The Year of Inclement Weather
American scientists are predicting that there may be as many as 17 tropical storms and hurricanes in 2007. The likelihood of at least one of them reaching the United States is assessed as well above average, according to experts at Colorado State University and the AccuWeather weather forecasting company.
They are predicting a minimum of nine tropical storms and five hurricanes, AP reports. Several hurricanes, tornados and tropical storms hit the U.S. every year, and an average of about 70 people die as a result of them. The latest hurricane in the country killed ten people and almost fully obliterated the town of Greensberg, Kansas. More than 1500 people died in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, making it the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.
Another threat to property and life is fire. Forest fires in Florida have led to the evacuation of 200 homes. Authorities in areas of Georgia bordering on Florida are also preparing for evacuations. The fires have engulfed 52,600 ha. Strong winds and dry weather are hampering firefighting efforts. A state of emergency has been declared in Florida, but there are no reports of casualties from the fires yet.
