U.S. to Build Immigrantion Center at Guantanamo
An processing center for immigrants from Latin America will open at the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba by May 2008, Agence France-Presse reports. There are now about 380 terrorism suspects being held at the facility. The U.S. expects massive immigration from Latin American countries in the near future. A Pentagon official described the new center as preparation for the “historical development” of the region.
The Pentagon did not specify the specific countries that would provide the new influx of immigrants, but the center may be connected with the eventual death of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who has not been seen in public since an intestinal operation in July 2006.
The Florida firm Islands Mechanical Contractors has received the contract to build the sewage treatment plant, administration center, fences, storage areas and other facilities for the new center.
