Russia’s Photojournalist Killed in Iraq
The journalist killed by the land-mine explosion in northeastern Baghdad was the citizen of Russia, said spokesmen of the U.S. military force in Iraq. Earlier, the death of the Russian had been confirmed by the RF Foreign Ministry.
Six U.S. soldiers and a journalist were killed May 6, 2007 by a land mine that exploded in one of the roads of northeastern Iraq. The killed journalist was photographer Dmitry Chebotaev of Russia, who had been working both for Russia’s and foreign media. All seven victims were in one and the same patrol car when the blast occurred.

Iraq remains the most dangerous state for journalists, according to UNESCO. Some 69 journalists were slain there past year, over 170 have been killed and more than 50 abducted since the start of the U.S. combat action there in 2003. The reporters have never been killed in such large numbers before, UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura said not long ago.
