Sarkozy Triumphed in France, Giving Rise to Sporadic Violence
Nicolas Sarkozy from UMP has triumphed in the second round of presidential election in France. The final calculation of 100 percent of vote, including overseas, extended the rule of the right in France for another term.
Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy enjoyed the support of 53.06 percent of the ballot, while socialist Segolene Royal lost with 46.94 percent. The turnout was 83.97 percent in France, but only 42.13 percent voted overseas, RIA Novosti reported.

Successor to retiring Jacque Chirac, a former interior minister Sarkozy pledged he would be more radical than Chirac but remain president of entire nation.

Sarkozy, who will become the first French president born after the WW2, will take office May 16, 2007 to rule France for five years. He will also be commander-in-chief of the armed forces and nominate a PM.

Socialist sympathizers rallied on the Bastille to protest against the UMP victory but were dispersed by police, who used tear gas and water jets against them.

Riots of defeated socialists hit a few more cities in France, including Nantes, Toulouse Lion. The protestors were clashing with police and attacking offices of Sarkozy’s party, blaming fascism and racism on elected president.
