IBF Champ Wladimir Klitschko Faces $5m Lawsuit
U.S. promoter Cedric Kushner, who is also the president of Gotham Boxing Inc., has filed a suit to New York State Supreme Court against IBF heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko of Ukraine, claiming from him $5 million for refusing to fight Shannon Briggs past November, ESPN.com reported.
Cedric Kushner accused Wladimir Klitschko and his promoter Shelly Finkel of the breach of contract, breach of covenant of good faith, fair dealing and of fraudulent misrepresentation. Klitschko camp, K2 Promotions and Sport Five had simply cheated Briggs, Kushner said.
"Briggs was strung along for close to two months by the Klitschko camp," Kushner said in a statement. "I relied on Shelly's word and regrettably that was a mistake," ESPN quoted Kushner as saying.
Instead of the bout with Briggs, whom Klitschko camp had initially picked out as contender, the Ukrainian fought Calvin Brock, the Banker, and defended the title by technical knockout.
Afterwards, Briggs fought Sergey Lyakhovich of Belarus, stripping him of the WBO title. The American will face Sultan Ibragimov of Russia on June 2.
