Pepper Gas Failed to Shut Up Estonia’s Ambassador
Activists of Russia’s youth movements attempted today to ruin news conference of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Estonia to Russia Marina Kaljurand. The event was due to start at 12:00 a.m. MSK, but pepper gas was sprayed in the news center just a few minutes before the scheduled beginning.
A few young men, who were picketing doors of the press center, managed to break into the premises and spray the gas. Mrs Kaljurand has begun news conference some time later, but the activists of Nashi, Mestnye (Locals) and Rossia Molodaya (Young Russia) movements of the youth are just 50 meters from the entrance.
The protesters have been blocking Estonia’s embassy in Moscow for a few days already, demanding to move back the Bronze Soldier Statue in Tallinn and halt excavations of Russia’s soldiers.
Russia and Estonia are at odds now. A big diplomatic conflict inflamed once the authorities of that Baltic state ruled to move the Statue of Soviet Army’s Bronze Soldier from Tonismägi Hill in downtown Tallinn to a military cemetery. This move triggered mass rioting April 27-28 and a resident of Russia was killed during the clashes.
The sources say Estonia’s embassy stopped releasing visas to Russians. Most of diplomats cannot walk freely in Moscow.
