Freedom House Calls Russia’s Mass Media Not Free
Russia’s mass media couldn’t be regarded free, concluded the report that Freedom House released Tuesday.
The attempts of Russia’s authorities to isolate independent media coupled with the intention to control Internet are amid the most alarming trends of 2006, said the news release dedicated to Freedom House report.
The Kremlin’s plans to control Internet may put the country in league with China, Vietnam and Iran, where the better part of reporters and so-called cyber-dissenters are subjected to criminal action.
Russia is also amid the states, where the media’s standing has materially deteriorated in the past five years. Other countries of the group are Venezuela, Thailand, Ethiopia, Philippines, Argentina and Uganda.
In addition to Russia, the media of ten more former republics of the Soviet Union couldn’t be regarded free. But Ukraine and Georgia enjoy the partially-free status and the Baltic States have free mass media.
Of 195 states, Russia holds the 165th position in ranking of mass media freedom. It was the 158th in 2005.
