U.S. Builds New Flying Radar
The Northrop Grumman Corp. has unveiled the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, a new radar-equipped cruiser-based long-distance aircraft. It is equipped with improved APY-9 radar with a electronically-scanned array.
The cockpit of the aircraft has LCD displays, a mission computer and flight management system. The aircraft has improved engines and the ability to refuel in-flight. It is the first of two planes that are part of a 2001 long-distance radar development program.

Testing of the plane ill be completed in 2011. The U.S. Air Force plans to acquire 75 E-2D models in the next ten years to replace E-2C Hawkeyes built in the 1970s and 1980s.
