The Patriarch's Back
Alexiy II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus, returned to Moscow on Tuesday after a prescheduled medical examination and vacation abroad. He will perform the Liturgy at the Pokrovsky Women's Monastery in Moscow on Wednesday. Head of the press service of the Moscow Patriarchy Vladimir Vigilansky told RIA Novosti information agency that the recent wave of rumors on the Internet about the Patriarch's poor health was “simply revolting.”
“Those reports in the media that appeared after the official refutation of the rumors of the illness and even death of His Holiness and after the confirmation of his schedule for coming services are particular cause for indignation,” Vigilyansky continued. He said that the information might be part of a campaign to prevent the signing of the Act of Canonical Communion between the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the Moscow Patriarchy. The signing is scheduled for May 17.
The Patriarch was unable to participate in the funeral of First President of Russia Boris Yeltsin because of his medical examination and vacation.
Last Friday, the Patriarch confirmed his schedule for the near future. He will perform the Divine Liturgy at Pokrovsky Monastery on May 2 to mark the day of memory and 55th anniversary of the death of the Blessed Matron of Moscow, whose reliquary is at the monastery. On May 5, His Holiness will perform the Divine Liturgy, prayers and a requiem at Butovo Field, Leningrad District, Moscow Region, for the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in Butovo. The next day, he will perform the Liturgy at the Cathedral of St. Georgy on Poklonnoe Hill on the saint's day of Holy Martyr Georgy the Victory-Bringer.
