Castro Admires Chinese “Market Socialism”
Cuban leader Fidel Castro praised Chinese “market socialism” in a letter to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Chavez stated while speaking at the Bolivarian Alternative (Spanish abbreviation ALBA) summit on Sunday. Castro analyzed China's successes in his ten-page letter and predicted that it would become one of the superpowers of the 21st century.
Chavez said that Castro referred to the writings of Mao Zedung and the memoirs of Ernesto Che Guevara in his letter. Castro also told Chavez that he was reading George Soros's book The Age of Fallibility: Consequences of the War on Terror. The letter ended “Homeland, socialism or death! We will be victorious!”

Chavez took the opportunity to emphasize that Castro is still governing Cuba. Cuban officials confirm Chavez's claim, saying that Castro is once again fulfilling a significant part of his responsibilities as head of state.

Castro turned over rule of the country to his brother Raul last summer due to illness. Official Cuban sources said that Fidel Castro has been recovering from surgery. Sources in the American administration continue to insist that Castro is terminally ill and dying, however.
