March of Discontented Up for Another Unsanctioned Rally
Organizers of the March of the Discontented are going to stage another opposition rally in Nizhny Novgorod, Central Russia, on Saturday despite an official ban, the Interfax news agency reported Friday.
The Nizhny Novgorod city hall earlier refused to sanction a rally in central Gorky Square, saying the United Russia Party had already reserved the square for its gathering. Authorities also would not agree to settle the rally in another proposed central venue, but suggested a place on the outskirts.
Up to 500 people are expected to attend the rally, an aide to the leader of the United Civilian Front, Garry Kasparov, told Interfax.
Organizers tried to stage the previous unsanctioned March of the Discontented in Nizhny Novgorod last Tuesday when riot police broke up the crowd, arresting dozens of people.
Six participants of the rally filed protests against violence of riot police and unsanctioned arrests. Local prosecutors, however, would not open criminal cases since they have found no proof to the violations described, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Friday.
