2/3 Russians Back Up the Third Term Idea
Two thirds of the Russians (65 percent) bolstered up the proposal of Federation Council Speaker Sergey Mironov to extend president’s authority from four years to seven years and sanction the head of the state to hold office for three terms in a row, showed the survey of All-Russia’s Public Opinion Center posted on its web-site.
The better part of respondents (69 percent) would like to have exactly Vladimir Putin as president, and therefore, support introducing respective amendments to the Constitution.
But 24 percent opposed the “third term” suggestion along with proposed extension of authority, and 23 percent would make no changes to the Constitution. Of interest is that their number shed 5 percent in the past year.
All-Russia’s Public Opinion Center held the sociological survey April 7 to 8; 1600 were interrogated in 46 regions of the country.
It was Federation Council Speaker Sergey Mironov that suggested extending the president’s tenure and authorizing him for three terms in the office. Mironov came up with this proposal on March 30 after being re-elected the Federation Council speaker for the third time.
Mironov addressed regional parliaments with this offer, urging them to discuss it. Three regions, including the Perm region, have officially supported the initiative already, Mironov said April 18, ITAR-TASS reported. Six regions back up the proposal, but haven’t given official responses yet, while some regions said they wouldn’t deliberate on Mironov’s suggestion.
