Ukraine’s PM Warns President about Impeachment
President Yushchenko could face an impeachment should the Constitutional Court of Ukraine decide against his decree to dissolve the parliament, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich said in Strasbourg Tuesday, Ukraine’s media reported.
Although Yanukovich specified that the way-out “should be looked for in the legal field exclusively,” he supposed that a negative award “may adversely affect the president.”
“Based on the expert evaluation of president’s decree, we thought he had chances to halt the decree at first, hold negotiations in the next move, find some compromise and then recall the decree even before the Constitutional Court’s award,” Yanukovich speculated.
“The second option is if we do wait for the Constitutional Court’s award and it proves not in favor of president’s decree. Of course, it will adversely affect President Yushchenko. And impeachment is one of the possible options,” the prime minister explained.
In Ukraine, the political crisis intensified once the country’s president inked a decree dissolving the parliament and slating elections for May 27. But the actual date of parliamentary elections depends on award of the Constitutional Court.
