Russia’s Gym Team Poisoned by Cheesecake
On April 11, the women-artistic gymnasts of Russia’s national team were unable to compete with the squad of Germany because of the mass food intoxication, Andrey Radionenko, chief coach of Russia’s team, told Ves Sport (All Sport) agency.
”We had a small holiday, and the girls had bought a cake, a cheesecake, in the store a day before,” Andrey Radionenko said. “As a result, of eight people, six fell ill with severe food intoxication. Most surprising is that two other girls and I also ate the cake – with no consequences whatsoever! I had the same in the family, poisonous product was in certain pieces of cake, not in all of them.”
“If we had bought one more cheesecake, nothing might have happened at all. So, we were due to make a flight, but the team was lying and training was completely out of the question. We could get down to working only on the third day after the gastric lavage,” the coach explained.
“Of course, it was a very unpleasant situation, from which we have drawn conclusions. It is very undesirable and even prohibited to independently buy food when staying at Ozero Krugloe (the Lake Krugloe) base," Radionenko said.
