Onishchenko to Enforce Marking Genetically Modified Product
Gennady Onishchenko, chief of the RF Federal Service on Consumer Rights Supervision and chief sanitary inspector of Russia, advocates marking the genetically modified product, Interfax reported.
“Our strategy is that consuming genetically modified product should be under the rule of information agreement. That is I must know I am consuming a genetically modified product despite the fact that it is sanctioned,” Onishchenko said during news conference in Interfax Monday.
“Currently, producers aren’t interested in it because of the rather high extent of distrust for genetically modified product. Sometimes, they are even unaware of using genetically modified raw, as they are not told about it.”
The size of genetically modified food raw material is going up each year in Russia, as, unfortunately, the country “depends on imported goods,” Onishchenko specified.
One of today’s highlights of Rospotrebnadzor is to win back the authority of adopting sanitary regulations. “The first thing I will do is to approve this notorious 0.9,” the official made clear, meaning marking the product with 0.9-percent content of genetically modified organisms.
