Iran to Construct 2 Nuclear Plants Worth $3.4bln
Iran’s authorities announced an intention to build two more nuclear plants, all word pressure notwithstanding, Associated Press reported with reference to Ahmad Fayyazbakhsh, deputy chief of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization.
Iran is willing to construct two nuclear plants, each generating up to 1,600MW and costing $1.7 billion, Ahmad Fayyazbakhsh vowed. The plans are to complete construction by 2018. Both nuclear plants will be built near Bushehr.
The respective tender has been announced already and a successful bidder will be named in early August, Fayyazbakhsh said, pointing out he had held negotiations with some foreign companies. The official didn’t disclose the name of negotiators.
But the extent of Iran’s plans correspondence to reality is yet unclear, same as Iran’s ability to fund two more plants. Russia, for instance, announced in February that it puts off the launch of Bushehr nuclear facility and shelves nuclear fuel supplies there on Iran’s failure to follow payment dates of the project.
Iran resumed payment in late March with Atomstroiexport receiving the first tranche only on March 26. But the amount covers only a half of the monthly costs required for normal construction, said a representative of Russia’s Atomic Energy Agency, Rosatom.
