Over Half of Russians Dream of New Apartment
The issue of improving their living conditions is important for 56 percent of Russians, but 72 percent of those polled have not taken mortgage loan and do not want to do it, reported the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) together with the National Agency for Financial Studies (NAFI).
Sociologists asked how important it is for Russians to improve their living conditions, what they know about mortgage lending, and what reasons prevent them from taking the loan.

The issue is important for the majority of Russians (56 percent). It is important to 15 percent of those polled in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and to 33 percent in other large cities of Russia.

Thirty-five percent of Russians know what mortgage is, and 44 percent more have heard something about it. Seventeen percent of respondents do not know anything about mortgage, and only 1 percent of Russians took the mortgage loan. Seventeen percent said they are going to take the loan, while 72 percent said they will not do it.

The main reasons that prevent Russians from taking the loan are: low incomes (36 percent), high interest rates (32 percent), insecurity of stable income (23 percent), rapid growth of real estate prices (15 percent).

The VCIOM polling was held on March 3-4, 2007. It polled 1,600 people in 153 localities in 46 regions, areas, and republics of Russia. Statistic discrepancy is not over 3.4 percent.
