State Duma Calls to Protect Russia’s Sovereignty Against the U.S.
Russia’s parliament, the State Duma, condemned Friday the human rights report of the U.S. Department of State, which voices concerns about the fate of democracy here.
The resolution of lawmakers condemns the United States for attempts to affect presidential and parliamentary elections in Russia via the actions of nongovernmental organizations. The RF Foreign Ministry is urged to “take emergency measures” to protect sovereignty of Russia.

The lawmakers called on Russia’s authorities, prosecutors and the Public Chamber to promptly take actions ensuring execution of laws related to NGOs and check the sources of their funding.

The U.S. Department of State released the report entitled "Supporting Human Rights and Democracy: The U.S. Record 2006" on April 6. The report makes extensive mention of the role of NGOs in free elections and expresses concern about the fate of democracy in Russia in light of upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections here.

Russia’s authorities rebuffed in no time. On Thursday, Foreign Ministry stated that document was of clearly political nature and poorly reflected the actual state of affairs in Russia, while the Federation Council lashed out at it Friday.
