NGO Law Is More Liberal in Russia Than In Europe, Local Officials Think
Russia’s NGO Act is more liberal than in Europe, said Alexander Yakovenko, deputy foreign minister of Russia, during the briefing on worldwide observance of human rights.
”In certain cases, our law is much more liberal than in a number of European states,” Yakovenko said when asked to comment on the report of the U.S. Department of State dedicated to the human rights observance in the world. The official referred to some definite comparative analysis and added that no common laws on human rights exist in other countries, including in the European Union.
”The report of the U.S. Deputy of State is of nonobjective and biased nature,” Yakovenko said, pointing out Russia’s Foreign Ministry had studied the laws of other counties before the NGO Act took effect in Russia.
In its April report on human rights, the U.S. Department of State faulted Russia for further aggravation of human rights observance, emphasizing further centralization of executive power, increased political pressure on judicial system, intolerance of ethnic minorities, corruption explosion, crackdown on nongovernmental organizations and so forth.
