Russia Against Space Arms Race
Russia opposes deploying any space weapons, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko announced in Moscow today when addressing the news conference, ITAR-TASS reported. April 12, 2007 is the Cosmonautics Day in Russia.
For Russia, “the key task today is elaborating comprehensive international and legal agreement that would ban deployment of weapons in space,” the official said, pointing out that the matter at stake is any kinds of weapons.

“Russia confirms its adherence to the peaceful use of space area in interests of all states and nations,” Yakovenko announced. “We are calling for preventing the use of outer space as a standoff, a potential theater of war operations,” the official said, manifesting that Russia hasn’t abandoned its efforts to reach a banning agreement for space weapons.
