Iran: Abandoning Nuclear Fuel Would Mean Abandoning Development
Iran's abandonment of nuclear fuel would mean the abandonment of the nation's future development, deputy speaker of the Russian State Duma and chairman of the parliamentary commission on relations with Iran Yury Savelyev told a press conference. “The escalation of tension around Iran is inseparably connected with the passage of UN Security Council resolution No. 1737. The resolution has no legal basis, since Iran has not violated the charter of the IAEA nor a single point of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. The attempts of some states to prevent Iran from producing nuclear fuel signify refusing it the right to the future development of the nation,” Savelyev said.
Savelyev continued by noting that Iran's oil reserves are estimated at 32-33 billion tons, and the United States' accusations against Iran are only “a pretense to get its paws on that wealth.”
Savelyev explained that Iran wants to replace hydrocarbons on the domestic market with nuclear energy to sell its hydrocarbon resources on the world market. “The only way to force Iran to denounce its nuclear program is to use nuclear weapons against the country, and that it fraught with unpredictable consequences,” he added.
Also present at the press conference was Valentin Ivanov, member of the State Duma Committee on Energy, Transportation and Communications, who said that “There are no special problems with Bushehr. We have to reach an exact agreement with the Iranian side on payment and the schedule for finishing work… Refusing to complete the plant would mean for Russia the loss of the confidence of potential customers for the construction of similar facilities.”
