Russia Threatens New Cold War, The Guardian Reported
Russia is considering active counter-measures in resonse to the U.S. intention to build a new missile defense system in Eastern Europe, Britain’s Guardian reported referring to Kremlin officials and signaling that a new cold war-style arms race could be unleashed.
The edition roots its conclusion in the interview with Dmitry Peskov, deputy briefer of the Kremlin. “We feel ourselves deceived. Potentially, we will have to create alternatives to this but with low cost and higher efficiency,” The Guardian cited Peskov as saying.

Russia will respond based on existing technologies, Peskov said, adding that President Vladimir Putin counts on the dialogue and negotiations in addition to the counter-actions.

Similar to some NATO states, Russia doubts that, once placed in Central Europe, the U.S. interceptors will be targeted at the rogue states exclusively. The analysts forecast Moscow to upgrade its nuclear arsenal. More missiles will be put on mobile launchers and nuclear submarines will be moved closer to the North Pole, making their detection much more complicated.

At the same time, the RF Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pledged that Russia will react without hysterics. Russia “cannot allow itself to get involved in the arms race once again,” and the response will be “based on technologies that could be developed by our military and industrial complex, science,” the minister made clear.
