Bush Signs NATO Bill
The NATO Freedom Consolidation Act of 2007 supports the expansion of the alliance and approves military aid for Albania, Croatia, Georgia, Macedonia and Ukraine in 2008. The bill was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives on March 6 and signed by U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday.
At a joint press conference held by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on March 1, both leader expressed the readiness of their countries to join the organization. “The country will be technically ready to enter a new stage of cooperation with NATO within a few months,” Saakashvili stated. Yushchenko stated that a third of his country was in favor of joining NATO, but 40 percent of Ukrainians “still need to make a determination.”
The new American law is intended to help the above-mentioned countries implement democratic and economic reforms as well as receive military aid.
