Russia Calls for Checking Ahmadinejad Statement on Uranium Enrichment
Moscow has no data proving that Tehran has proceeded to industrial enrichment of uranium, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday in response to Ahmadinejad’s statement about the startup of uranium enrichment.
”We have heard the statement of Iran’s president, take seriously the whole situation around the nuclear program of Iran and intend to be based not on emotional political gestures, there has been enough from different sides, but rather on the facts,” Lavrov said when commenting on the Monday statement of Ahmadinejad.
On Monday, the president of Iran claimed his country joined the nuclear club of nations producing nuclear fuel on industrial scale.
”We are clarifying the situation, including in contact with IAEA experts. We haven’t got a confirmation yet that they have begun the actual enrichment [of uranium] at new cascades,” Lavrov pointed out.
The work on agreeing with Iran the procedures for abrupt checks of Natanz facilities have been completed, Lavrov pointed out referring to the data of IAEA.
”We think it a step in the right direction and will proceed with watching the situation with the maximum attention, based on the definite facts, rather than on the statements occasionally pressurizing the atmosphere,” Russia’s minister emphasized.
