Metal Smugglers Unmasked in Russia
Russia’s Prosecutor General Office has brought charges against bosses of criminal group smuggling stainless steel and nickel alloys to Russia.
Overall, the criminals managed to smuggle from Russia roughly $1-billion worth of rolled steel and nickel without paying the customs charges of over $380 million, the prosecutors said.

According to investigators, top managers and founders of St. Petersburg companies – Baltiiskie Stali (Baltic Steel), Alfa-Metal, Baltmetallimpex and Delta - had elaborated procedures to illegally deliver from Russia the metal waste and smuggle the ready product back to the country.

The criminals set up dummy firms abroad with the alleged purpose of placing orders to process exported metal at works of Finland and Sweden.

Under the guise of processing and delivering ready product back to Russia, the criminals were smuggling waste metal and stainless steel scrap via the northwestern border to sell them to foreign companies without paying the customs charges.

Simultaneously, the criminals used offshore firms to buy the product made from nickel alloys and rolled steel and deliver it to Russia under the false documents as if it were the product processed from the metal previously exported from the country.
