Fire on an Atomic Icebreaker
A fire on the atomic icebreaker Arktika burned three cabins and knocked out an electricity-distribution shield, according to the news show Vesti. Nikolay Berezhny, head of the Murmansk Region emergency commission, the atomic generating system was not damaged.
The incident took place on Sunday morning. According to a source in Russian naval transport, smoke was notices at 10:40 and the section of the ship was evacuated and hermetically sealed. The crew activated the fire-prevention system and the blaze was localized by 7:00 p.m. There were no injuries.
The icebreaker was in the North Sea when the blaze erupted. It is now heading for Murmansk for repairs. The Russian Transportation Ministry has declined to comment on the incident.
The Arktika was launched in 1975. It was the first ship to sail to the North Pole above water. It was renovated in the 1990s.
