First of New Line of Submarine to Be Launched
The strategic missile-carrying submarine Yury Dolgoruky will be launched on April 15. It was built under Project 955 and will be fully equipped and tested next year. The most modern strategic submarine now in service is the K-407 Novomoskovsk, launched in 1992.
No detailed description of the new submarine is available yet. A number of sources report that its design is based on that of the multipurpose atomic submarine of Project 971. It is also known that it will carry 12 Bulava atomic warheads and submarines mass produced under Project 955A will carry up to 16 warheads of that type. Unsuccessful tests of the Bulava may delay preparations of the submarines.

Two missile-bearing strategic submarines of the new type, the Alexander Nevsky and Vladimir Monomakh, are being built in Severodvinsk. A total of four of the type are planned in the first series. The Russian Navy has announced that at least eight of the submarines will be built all together.
