Over 50 Percent of Russians Complain of Bad Ecology
As many as 57 percent of Russians negatively evaluated the state of ecology in their living communities, signaled the poll of All-Russia’s Public Opinion Center.
At the same time, only 10 percent of respondents came up with “very bad” or “close to catastrophic” evaluation of environment, while 47 percent manifested the more optimistic attitude and assessed it “rather unfavorable.”

Of interest is that the figurers were relatively the same in May of 2005, when a similar survey was held. Moreover, each second respondent (49 percent) doesn’t think the state of ecology will change in the following two or three years, though 38 percent expect further decline and 6 percent forecast some improvement. Residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg are the least optimistic. In these two biggest cities of Russia, 43 percent clearly foresee deterioration and no more than 3 percent hope for the better.

The poll of All-Russia’s Public Opinion Center covered 1,600 people in 153 settlements of 46 regions, districts and republics of Russia; the statistical error doesn’t exceed 3.4 percent.
