Litvinenko Foundation Refuses Aid to Lugovoy, Kovtun
A founder of the Litvinenko Justice Foundation has dismissed demands of two witnesses in the Alexander Litvinenko case who seek compensations from the organization, the Independent newspaper said on its web-site Friday. “These two individuals deserve not a compensation but a life sentence,” Alexander Goldfarb said.
Two businessmen met former FSB agent Alexander Litvinenko in London on the day he fell ill. Andrey Lugovoy and Dmitry Kovtun, who were exposed to radiation, said Thursday they would seek compensation from the Litvinenko Foundation. Mr. Lugovoi said he was in hospital for three weeks and Mr. Kovtun for more than a month.

The Litvinenko Foundation was set up this week by self-exiled Russian businessman Boris Berezovsky, Litvinenko’s widow Marina, and his friend and human rights activist Alexander Goldfarb. Mr. Berezovsky has made a ₤500,000 contribution to launch the organization.

Another founder of the charity, Boris Berezovsky, told the RIA Novosti news agency on Thursday that the foundation is ready to help the two businessmen. “We are ready to provide assistance to Kovtun and Lugovoy, primarily, legal aid in defending their rights,” said Mr. Berezovsky who was questioned by Russian investigators last week in connection with the death of Litvinenko.

Boris Berezovsky specified that the Litvinenko Foundation does not pay compensations but provides assistance in securing damages from British authorities.

Former Russian security agent Alexander Litvinenko died in a London hospital last November. The doctors said the reason of his death was poisoning by radioactive polonium 210.
