Russian Meat Embargo Politically Motivated – Poland
Russia’s ban on Polish meat imports is likely to have been a political move, the Polish foreign minister said Thursday, Reuters reported.
Polish Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga said Thursday that the ban was affecting relations between Poland and Russia at every level. “These bans have been imposed for political reasons rather than technical ones,” Reuters quoted the minister as saying. Ms. Fotyga added that a meeting between Polish President Lech Kaczynski and President Vladimir Putin could not take place until the ban was lifted.

Russia banned Polish mean products in November 2005, saying it had discovered fraudulent veterinary inspection certificates. Warsaw insists that the ban is politically motivated.

Meanwhile, the European Commission suggested that Poland might be ready to lift its veto from talks on an EU-Russia partnership deal before a planned summit in mid-May even if the Russian embargo remained in place.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski, however, reiterated on Thursday that Poland’s position is unchanged, and the veto cannot be withdrawn without lifting the ban.
