Witnesses in Litvinenko Case Ask Berezovsky for Compensations
Two witnesses in the Alexander Litvinenko case are set to ask for compensations from a foundation set up by Russian businessman Boris Berezovsky in honor of the murdered former FSB agent, the Interfax news agency said Thursday.
Russian businessman and political émigré Boris Berezovsky launched the Litvinenko Justice Foundation along with Mr. Litvinenko’s widow Marina, Russian human rights activist Alexander Goldfarb and human rights lawyer Louise Christian. Mr. Berezovsky has already made a £500,000 contribution.
The foundation will campaign for justice in the case as well as seek compensations for all those contaminated by polonium 210, the radioactive material that killed Litvinenko.
Two Russian businessmen Andery Lugovoy and Dmitry Kovtun met Litvinenko shortly before his death. The two men later tested positive for polonium. Applications for the compensations to be sent to the fund, Mr. Lugovoy said in an interview with Interfax. Dmitry Kovtun says he wants to secure the foundation’s assistance in “defending honor of the Russian businessmen in British court”.
British press has repeated called Andrey Lugovoy and Dmitry Kovtun suspects in the murder case, quoting unnamed sources which also said Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind the murder.
