Yushchenko Set to Declare State of Emergency – Opposition
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko may decide to declare state of emergency and president’s rule in the country, a top official the opposition Party of Regions told RBC Ukraine late Wednesday. The deputy reiterated that the parliament views the recent decree to dissolve the assembly as a coup d’etat.
The Ukrainian president made clear at a meeting with police and army officials that he is following a well-devised plan, Vasily Kiselev, first deputy head of the Party of Region’s faction in the parliament, said Wednesday. The scheme was drawn up on the other side of the Atlantic, not in Ukraine, according to Mr. Kiselev.
Ukraine’s parliament met Tuesday night for an extraordinary session to pre-empt what they said was Yushchenko’s decision to declare state of emergency and president’s rule, a member of the Socialist Party of Ukraine reported Wednesday.
A deputy from the Party of Regions, Vladimir Sivkovich, says the Ukrainian president is going to dismiss Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich and his government and assume the executive power. “I received information from sources in the president’s office that they are already drafting an anticonstitutional decree,” Mr. Sivkovich said, adding that Mr. Yushchenko is going to declare president’s rule. “If it happens, we may as well forget about a fair and democratic election.”
