300 Kilos Heroin Seized in Russia This Year
Over 300 kilograms of heroin, 140 kilograms of hashish and over 3 tons of marijuana have been seized in Russia this year, Russian drug supervision authorities reported Wednesday.
Investigators opened 215 criminal cases on drug trafficking charges this year, according to Alexander Mikhailov from the Russian drug supervision agency. 87 cases have already been sent to court. About 800 cases which were under investigation in the first three months of 2007 concern drug dens and their owners.
In 2006, Russian police confiscated 92.5 tons of drugs with the number of drug-related crimes increasing.
Afghanistan and its neighbor Tajikistan are still major drug exporters for Russia. What is more, Russia often acts as a transit point in drug trafficking to Europe.
The Federal Drug Circulation Supervision Service also battles against drug money laundry. 1,500 crimes of this kind were uncovered in 2006 with the total sum of legalized money reaching at least 570 million rubles.
