Ukrainian Intelligence to Protect Election Authorities
Ukraine’s Security Service is going to do its best to secure normal work of the Central Election Commission and election authorities in regions, the acting head of the Security Service said Tuesday, the UNIAN news agency reported.
All attempts to change the status and line-up of election commissions or influence the Central Election Commission will be regarded as a violation of the country’s constitution, acting head of the Security Service Valentin Nalivaichenko said after meeting President Viktor Yushchenko.

The Security Service will take steps to ensure the legal and unimpeded functioning of all election authorities in the run-up to the early parliamentary election, according to the chief of the Security Service.

Mr. Nalivaichenko says there are enough ways to secure the free vote in Ukraine. At the same time, the head of the Ukrainian intelligence is convinced that force will not be employed.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko signed a decree on Monday to dissolve the parliament and order a new election. The Supreme Rada, however, passed a resolution protesting the decision. The deputies, in their turn, ordered to dissolve the Central Election Commission and barred the government from financing the election.
