Sharapova Pulls Out of Fed Cup
Russia’s number one tennis player Maria Sharapova is to skip the Fed Cup again, pulling out of a tie against Spain with shoulder and hamstring injuries.
The Russian got a shoulder injury earlier this season before a tournament in Hong Kong, according to her official web-site. Having consulted with doctors, Sharapova decided to skip the planned tournaments.
“My doctors have a positive outlook, despite telling me I cannot play for a while,” the world number 2 said in a statement. “They said I must drop out of the next two events, but they are confident that, with five or six weeks of rest, I will be ready for the next two events.”
“I am especially bummed about the Fed Cup, as I was looking forward to playing in Moscow. I will be speaking with the Russian Federation soon about future matches.”
Back in March Shamil Tarpishchev, coach of the Russian national team, confirmed Sharapova’s participation in the Fed Cup’s first round tie on April 21-22 in Moscow. Now Dinara Safina is now high on list to substitute the 19-year-old world number two. Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadezhda Petrova and Anna Chakvetadze have already booked their places in the team.
