Opposition Calls on Ukrainian President to Dissolve Parliament
Leader of the pro-presidential Our Ukraine party has called on President Viktor Yushchenko to dissolve the parliament, the RIA Novosti news agency reported Friday. Ukraine’s president on Thursday lashed out at the government, accusing ministers of violating constitution.
“If there is no early election, we may as well forget about democracy,” Vyacheslav Kirilenko, leader of Our Ukraine, said on Friday.
Parliamentary opposition on Friday reconvened the Committee for National Salvation — formed during the 2004 Orange Revolution — to appeal to President Yushchenko to call new elections.
Opposition activists are already drafting an appeal to the president to dissolve the parliament, Mr. Kirilenko announced at a session of the committee on Friday. “This parliament is unable to represent interests of the Ukrainian people,” he said. “The parliamentary majority was shaped by purchase and sale of posts.”
Our Ukraine leader also added that he is sure that Ukrainians will support the dissolution of the Rada at a major ally in downtown Kyiv on Saturday.
