Federation Council Wants to Amend Constitution
Federation Council Speaker Sergey Mironov suggested Friday the parliament consider a possibility of amending the Russian constitution. The initiative can potentially see the Russian president running for more than two terms in office.
Sergey Mironov was re-elected on Friday to chair the Federation Council. He also voiced an idea to amend the Russian constitution.

Among other things, Sergey Mironov offered to scrap a ban for one person to run for the Russian presidency for more than two terms in a row. The head of the Federation Council also suggests throwing out a provision restricting the term in office to four years. The period should be extended to five or even seven years, Mr. Mironov believes.

Several Russian politicians have already come up with initiatives in the past few years to keep incumbent President Vladimir Putin for another term. The president, however, has repeatedly spoken against any changes in the Constitution.

Sergey Mironov said three years ago that a 7-year presidential term is a matter of distant future, though he admitted that longer time in office would give the president more opportunities for efficient work.
