Arab Leaders Find New Threats
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said in Saudi Arabia on Thursday he saw a “revolutionary change” in the Arab world. He pointed out to the exacerbation of conflict in Lebanon, saying this process has brought Arab leaders to realize that “Israel is not the biggest of all their troubles”.
Speaking at the end of the Arab League summit on Thursday, Ehud Olmert described its results as significant, Reuters reported Friday.
Arab leaders on Thursday endorsed a peace plan to settle conflict with Israel. The plan offers Israel normal ties with Arab states in return for withdrawal from land occupied in the 1967 war and the creation of a Palestinian state. Washington lauded the initiative as “very positive”.
The Israeli foreign ministry said later the Israeli are ready to hold talks with the Arab League. “Israel is sincerely interested in pursuing a dialogue with those Arab states that desire peace with Israel,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. “Israel hopes that the Riyadh summit will contribute to a process of normalization and cooperation.” However, the statement stopped short of welcoming the land-for-peace plan.
