Hiddink Names His Retirement Date
An adviser to the Russian national soccer team coach said Guus Hiddink has decided to retire from sports after the 2010 World Cup, The Guardian newspaper reported Wednesday. Cees van Nieuwenhuizen says Mr. Hiddink would like to stay till the end of the tournament with whichever team.
“Guus has a contract with Russia until the end of Euro 2008,” Cees van Nieuwenhuizen said in an interview with The Guardian. “If the Russian team qualifies, it will not be until next summer. It is up to him then what he does. He won’t lose one second thinking about what he will do afterwards. But he wants to finish his career as a coach at the World Cup in 2010, with whichever team.”
Guus Hiddink is going to consider an offer from England’s Football Association if England is interested in his services, Mr. van Nieuwenhuizen says.
Russia’s soccer team coach was once strongly tipped to take helm at the English team until Roman Abramovich, who funds National Football Academy, allegedly persuaded the Dutch to sign a contract with the Russian Football Union.
Russia and England are both playing in the E group, the Russians now at number 2 and three points ahead of the English.
